Abstract
This document intends to provide a panoramic, brief perspective of the Harrisian theory of language. It is mainly based on its summary by Harris himself in his magnum opus: 'A Theory of Language and Information - A Mathematical Approach', published in 1991, near the end of his life. We will therefore introduce essentially and very succinctly:
(i) the starting point of the theory, a theory based on constraints, grounded on and inspired by information theory;
(ii) the fundamental constraints and how they contribute to the information conveyed by language;
(iii) the method that necessarily follows from the adoption of this view of the functioning and study of language;
(iv) the nature of the descriptions that can be developed with that theory and that method;
and, finally, (v), some of the results already obtained in the description of large sections of natural languages, with particular reference to Portuguese.
Este documento pretende fornecer uma perspetiva panorâmica, necessariamente sucinta, da teoria harrissiana da linguagem, tendo sido elaborado sobretudo com base na síntese que o próprio Harris fez na sua magna opus: A Theory of Language and Information - A Mathematical Approach, publicada em 1991, perto do final da sua vida. Aqui se irá, pois, apresentar essencialmente e de forma muito sucinta:
(i) o ponto de partida da teoria, uma teoria baseada em restrições, fundada e inspirada na teoria matemática da informação;
(ii) as restrições fundamentais e a forma como elas contribuem para a informação que é veiculada pela linguagem;
(iii) a metodologia a que necessariamente se chega pela adopção desta perspetiva sobre o funcionamento e o estudo da linguagem;
(iv) a natureza das descrições que é possível elaborar a partir da teoria e apoiadas na metodologia assim definida;
e, finalmente, (v), alguns dos resultados já obtidos na descrição de largas secções de línguas naturais, com especial referência ao português.
