The « Austrasian moment » in the history of the cult of Saint Martin
We can start from a paradox : Sulpicius Severus, at the end of the 4th century, underlines the fundamental role of Trier in the life of Martin, on the other hand he never mentions Mainz. However in the 7th century, the cult of Saint Martin seems very discreet in Trier but very important in Mainz where the cathedral under his name will shine throughout the east of the Frankish kingdom. Austrasia of the 7th century concerned both Touraine and the eastern part of the Frankish kingdom. Gregory of Tours is therefore an essential witness but we must also mention Venantius Fortunatus whose journey, conceived as a pilgrimage to Saint Martin, gave great importance to the Danube, the Rhine, the Meuse ...

On peut partir d'un paradoxe : Sulpice Sévère, à la fin du IVè siècle, souligne le rôle fondamental de Trèves dans la vie de Martin, en revanche il ne mentionne jamais Mayence. Pourtant au VIIè siècle, le culte de saint Martin semble très discret à Trèves mais très important à Mayence où la cathédrale sous son vocable va rayonner sur tout l'est du royaume franc. L'Austrasie du VIIè siècle concernait à la fois la Touraine et la partie orientale du royaume franc. Grégoire de Tours est donc un témoin essentiel mais il faut aussi évoquer Fortunat dont le voyage, conçu comme un pèlerinage à saint Martin, donna une grande importance au Danube, au Rhin, à la Meuse...
