Grégoire le Grand, les moines et la ville

Abstract : Pope Gregory the Great gave numerous insights on monastic life while he was himself a monk before becoming pope and even the first monk raised to papacy. His letters give many details about monasteries in an urban environment. Rome is of course well documented but a long list of monastic houses can be established throughout ancient western parts of the roman empire. What are the specific " urban " features of these religious foundations ? And what was the picture of the city in Gregory's views ?
